Ancient Ilida is the city of Olympic Games. Ilis was welcoming and hosting the athletes and their escorts who participated at the Olympic Games, who were obliged to stay there certain period of time before the Olympic Games started. The athletes were practicing at the city’s sports facilities, were informed about competition regulations, participated at the qualifying matches and attended the cultural events organized to honor them by Ilis.

Kaiafas

Kaiafas region and homonyms spa town includes the lagoon, Ionian Sea, the extended clean sandy beach and Strofylias wonderful pinewood.
The spas begin at mythical times and our ancestors believed that nymphs resided inside the big cave.
It is hydro biotope, the second important in Ilias region. It is separated from the sea with a part of pinewood which is also named “Strofylia” and some special sand formations too.

 

 

Nedas’ waterfalls

Nedas’ canyon, which is traversed by the homonymous river, that took its name from nymph Neda, is a rare spot of Greek nature. The continuous changes in the landscape, lush vegetation, the huge stones into the light green waters and the imposing rocks, make its passage a real challenge, but also an enjoyment too. The canyon gets accessible during the summer months while the beauty of the place is composed by olive groves, fig trees, plane trees, wild oak trees and yews. At several spots of the path there are three waterfalls which end in small fonts.

 

The forest of folois

The only flat forest in Greece, 218.000 acres, is consisted from oaks and it is part of NATURA 2000 network because of its importance that is estimated by antiquity.
It is located at an altitude of 630m and took its name from mythology and from Centaurs’ king Folo. All over the plateau the straight oak dominates, that the people of the region named Kapeli which means dense or abundant forest. It is one of the rarest forests, unique in Balkans. Its oak trees are tall but straight like cypress and some of them are thick and polyclonal like forest’s queens”.

 

 

National park of Kotychi wetlands

Kotychiou Stofylias’ national wetland park is a tapestry of important habitat, with rare species of flora and fauna and great natural beauty. It is an attraction for every visitor. The routes through the forest and beside the lagoons, the coastal line with dunes, and even meadows filled with water in winter offer a unique opportunity for explorations. It is internationally important for birds, which are the most valuable elements of the natural environment and indicators of health of ecosystems.

 

Enjoy Katakolo

Katakolo is a seaside town and it is the current port of the capital of the county. Picturesque with an intense traditional color, it combines mountain and sea.

Agios Andreas

Mercouri Estate is an old, big estate with 140 years history at wine, oil and formerly Corinthian raisin production.
The vine is cultivated and quality wine is produced since 1870 at Mercouri Estate, a 140 years tradition which started with “Refosco”. Later the important “Mayrodafni” was added and they both produced our first brand name wine “, the “Mercouri estate”.
Today both varieties which are grown and the wines which are produced by them have significantly widened.
The estate is open to the public, where you can try excellent wines from the winery.

 

Loutra Kilinis – Roman Baths

At Kastroy- Kilinis mineral springs, in antiquity there were Asclepius, Aphrodite’s and other god’s sanctuaries. Hydrotherapy center was there since then but since Roman times too and later on as it is evidenced by the ruins of Roman Baths.
Baths’ waters constitute a valuable hydrotherapy factor, but also mud, sludge (that comes from sulfide source) has therapeutic and cosmetic qualities. Today there is the most modern hydrotherapy center in European Union.
